Automation gets pitched as a big, complicated project, but a handful of small automations tend to have the best return for the least setup — often before you'd consider hiring any additional help.
First: instant lead routing. A form submission or missed call should generate an immediate text or email to whoever's supposed to follow up, not sit in an inbox until someone checks it. This alone recovers leads that would otherwise go cold overnight or over a weekend.
Second: automated review requests. A short text or email sent automatically a day or two after a completed job, asking for a review, consistently outperforms remembering to ask in person — and it's the single easiest way to build a review base without extra effort per job.
Third: booking confirmations and reminders. If you take appointments, an automatic confirmation plus a reminder 24 hours out measurably reduces no-shows, which is often a bigger cost to a service business than people account for.
A good way to prioritize among these three if you can only start with one: pick whichever failure mode currently costs you the most sleep. If missed leads are the recurring frustration, start with routing. If your review count is thin compared to how long you've been in business, start there instead.
None of these require expensive software — most can be built with a free-tier automation tool (Zapier, Make, or a self-hosted option like n8n) connected to a form, a calendar, and a phone number you already use.
None of these require a full custom software build — they're the kind of thing we can usually wire up in a day or two once a website already exists to hang them off of.
