As a plumber, you've put thought into what appears on your Google Business Profile (GBP) – the photos, descriptions, and categories. But have you considered how customers interact with you there? The messaging feature lets homeowners send messages to your business directly from the profile page.
If not set up correctly, this can quickly turn into a notification nightmare. Homeowners may see your GBP as their best bet for an immediate response – perhaps even at 11pm when they're dealing with an emergency leak. To avoid this, you need to think through how and when to use the messaging feature.
First, make sure messaging is turned on in your GBP settings. This allows you to receive notifications whenever a customer sends a message. You can also set up automated responses that provide basic information like business hours or contact details.
For more complex queries, consider setting aside specific times for checking and responding to messages. A dedicated time each day to address these interactions will help prevent late-night distractions and ensure timely service.
In terms of etiquette, remember that the messaging feature is a direct channel between you and your customers. This means avoiding generic responses or simply sending them back to your website. Treat their queries as opportunities to build trust and show off your expertise – for example, by providing specific advice on how to prevent future emergencies.
Lastly, be mindful of response times. While it's impossible to respond instantly to every message, setting clear expectations can help manage customer expectations. A simple 'we'll get back to you within the next [X] hours' can go a long way in maintaining trust and satisfaction.
